Taking an Experimental Approach to Sustainability. To ensure higher chances of success, you may consider testing the efficacy of each sustainability solution in a smaller pilot, with an explicit ‘test protocol’. These should specify factors such as: Your vision of success; the hypotheses to be tested; the duration of the pilot; the number of sample measurements to be taken; the degree of statistical significance when differences are observed; and the follow-through to ROI, such as take up rates for your new green logistics offerings among your target customer segments. Instead of installing motion sensors in the entire warehouse, you could for example first select a few aisles to pilot a number of motion sensors, and compare the energy and cost savings between the lighting in aisles with motion sensors and those without motion sensors. These pilots could also be useful to calibrate details such as the optimal hold time for the motion sensors, so warehouse operators will not be working in the dark.

Communicating Results of Sustainability Initiatives. You should document early wins to build internal momentum, while also communicating your improved sustainability performance to clients.
